Paris Cuisine and Culture - Day 3

Mercredi matin started with blue skies and a fresher feel to the air. Despite a rather long journey into Paris, we arrived at our destinations early. One half of the group were dropped off just by the Hôtel de Ville for their 3 course cookery course at the ‘La Cuisine’ cookery school, while the other half went on down to the 14th arrondisement to Le Petit Mitron, a fabulous artisan bakery run by Didier, a maître boulanger. While the cooking group were chopping and roasting and baking, the others enjoyed a fascinating insight into how baguettes are made, the secrets of a dry-bottomed croissant and, while we didn’t get to knead the dough, we crimped and rolled and tasted French bread and vienoisseries at their finest. It was a real pleasure to spend time with someone who is so dedicated to les arts culinaires.

After a brief flit through the Isle de la Cité, taking in the grand façade of Notre Dame before the heavens opened, we were skilfully driven by Rob, our ever-patient driver, up to the base of Montmartre to ascend the steps to the Sacre Coeur. We enjoyed the view which was clear in the warm sun and then had some time to explore the ubiquitous Place du Tertre (and its ice cream shops). It was only on the way down that we revealed that there is actually a funicular going up the hill but we didn’t want the group to know as the exercise does them good!

After a rather long drive home, we were rewarded with another slot in the pool before supper in the canteen and then a cheese-themed evening which involved tasting, quiz, and even a cracker eating contest in which Rowan and Gus were joint winners. The overall winners of the quiz – ‘The Frisky Fromages’ (Amie, Valentina, Megan, Dora, Ella and Zara) impressed the judges with their creative taste combinations of different cheeses, their witty cheese-related jokes and detailed knowledge of many aspects of le fromage.

Tomorrow, the two halves of the group swap activities in the morning followed by some new excitements in the afternoon and evening.

Au revoir!
