Creative Writing Day 4

Thursday at the Arvon Centre and things have got so busy that only one student (the intrepid Richard) wanted to go for a walk. People have been writing songs (Amber), plays (Lally) and short stories (Ev) amongst others, buoyed on by our wonderful tutors who’ve been giving the group more one-to-one tutorials.
The dinner team whipped up a wonderful mash to go with the local bangers and then the main evening event was a ‘covers night’ where the group recited their favourite poems or prose extracts. Tom and Olga compèred with wit and alacrity and we were particularly blown away by singing from Maisie and a genuinely moving monologue from Issy.
The evening was rounded off with an extended bedtime and a choice between a movie night and an impromptu poetry composing session for Anna’s birthday, which falls tomorrow.

Creative Writing Day 3

Today, we are going to match the vast quantity of amazing writing with the inverse:

The weather is sublime, the food delicious, the writing inspiring and the writers are wonderful.

We had an evening performance from the sparkling Vanessa Kisuule which we all enjoyed, especially the one about clubbing …

Creative Writing Day 2

Day two has been one where we’ve really settled in.

The morning saw us begin at the very leisurely time of 10 a.m. (although not quite early enough for George) with writing a workshop in which we were asked to write poems about the most mundane subjects. Alexandra wrote a genuinely powerful piece on a rug while Lily’s supermarket poem was haunting.

After a delicious lunch we broke off into various groups: some went to see the writers in residence for one-to-one tutorials while others reported for duty in the kitchen under the expert leadership of Chef Maxted. The stars of the kitchen today were Matthew and Amber whose cooking was so good, there were no leftovers!

While a few stragglers were lounging around in the beautiful grounds, an intrepid group, led by the ever energetic Mr Goldsmith, popped up the track to the nearest metropolis, Sheepwash. A quick trip to the shop and a circuit of the main architectural sights of the village (see photo (can you spot the shark made out of straw?)) then allowed them to return via a more scenic (or perhaps should we say soggy?) route. While the return leg was supposed to be a meandering stroll along the river, it became a more epic quest to return in time for supper. Eventually, after fording a stream, avoiding a herd of very friendly cattle and skirting an electric fence, they made their way home, hot but proud of their adventure. Cas was particularly enamoured of the cows.

Finally, we enjoyed a birthday ‘evning’ (for Ev) who turned 17 today. Instead of cake, we celebrated with vegan ice cream (his request) and were then treated to a recital by our two writers who wowed us with their vivacity and creative bravura.

Creative Writing Day 1

Paddington Station … a group forms … the journey begins…

Everyone got to where they needed to be on time and everything worked in terms of connections.

Our first day on arrival at the idyllic Arvon Centre at Totleigh Barton involved settling into our room, exploring this 15th century farmhouse and the grounds around, and meeting the people here – the writers and the team who run the place. We welcomed Anna and Olga, two students from Round Square schools from Denmark and Essex, and began to bond as a group. There is a great sense of peace here and the countryside is bucolic (literally – there are cows all around) which is already having a very positive effect on everyone around.

In the evening, we had a lovely meal around the huge, ancient oak table with produce from the fields around, and then finished with a couple of introductory writing exercises which were great fun and broke the ice.

Tomorrow, we’re looking forward to celebrating Ev’s birthday and getting stuck into our first full day of writing sessions and one-to-one tutorials.

CREATIVE WRITING IN DEVON

Having a great time writing in Devon with our tutors in beautiful surroundings!
Also enjoying some fantastic home-cooked suppers made by the students. Bangers and mash this evening (by Frankie, Tomasz, Daria and Miss Bell); a Mexican evening yesterday (thank you to Louis, Rachel and Tiggy) and Keralan Fish Curry on Tuesday (courtesy of the two Chloe's, Jonny and Mr Joseph). Well done to all the impressive cook teams!
Author Tim Bowler gave an amazing talk last night. So good, that the local cows tried to gatecrash through the barn venue window! Fantastic session with Courttia Newland today with our 'marble stories.'

Getting ready for the grand finale tomorrow evening; one final drama-writing workshop with Jessica Swale and then an evening of readings from the students.
