Dartmoor Day 3

Dartmoor Day 3 witnessed “Lake Day”. The students spent as much time in the water as they did out of it! Over the course of the day, students had a go at kayaking, canoeing and raft building.

The kayakers impressed with their speed and agility, particularly during a game of kayak football and polo. Without a doubt, everyone ended up in the water at some stage! The canoeing took a little bit of getting used to and provided everyone with an opportunity to build teamwork and leadership skills. To finish the session, all students thoroughly enjoyed the canoe slide into the water! Raft building proved a highlight as ever. Three groups took on the challenge to build a raft that could carry at least ten, float, and enable the team to paddle out to the island to rescue a teacher! Mr Martin diligently waited to be rescued for quite some time, much to the amusement of all, before the group’s raft dramatically and titanically sunk! Fortunately, the final group of the day worked together brilliantly to build a raft that floated with stunning ease and sturdiness. They picked up a very impressed Miss Chapman and escorted her all the way back to shore!

After another day in the scorching sun, spirits were high. The staff yet again commented on the group’s superb attitude. In the evening, students learnt about bushcraft. They all built wood dens and learnt how to create a fire, which came in good use when marshmallows were whipped out! Tomorrow, we will be surfing all day!

Dartmoor - Day 2

After a great first day of pony-trekking or mountain boarding, spirits were high - most notably at 6:30am, a good hour before the agreed alarm time! Due to a slightly wobbly start on the kit-front yesterday, Sgt.Maj. Martin held a necessary kit inspection in preparation for the day's activities. The troops passed with flying colours, except the student who only had one shoe...

After a brisk hike followed by a bike ride to the Meldon Gorge, Sgt.Maj.Martin's troops prepared for action. Half the group went gorge scrambling, which was a welcome relief from the blistering sunshine, whilst the other group started with rock climbing. After lunch, there was a quick swap to the next activity. The gorge scramblers raced up waterfalls, jumped into pools and played a couple of swimming games. When rock climbing, the groups impressed with their tenacity and enthusiasm. The centre staff commented on how impressed they were with the students' attitudes to all activities; they listened well, were keen to get involved and very polite. After a quick cycle and hike home, we are heading into an evening of Quiz Night Fun.

Tomorrow brings Lake Day: canoeing, kayaking and team raft-building!

Dartmoor - Day 1

After arriving in sunny Dartmoor,  half the group went pony trekking and the other half enjoyed mountain boarding. In the evening, after a few rounds of linkee in the garden, the whole group went on a night walk to explore the local area.

Dartmoor - Day 4

Another wet, but fun day! A very sleepy start, but the students loved today's activities. The cycle tour, followed by gorge scrambling and rock climbing and a cycle back to the centre. All rounded off with a bit of bushcraft and some toasted marshmallows!

Mountain boarding on Dartmoor yesterday afternoon.

Half the trip did this and the other half did Pony Trekking.

Dartmoor - Day 2

Having an excellent time in Dartmoor. We’ve had a busy few days.

Today was spent on Widemouth Bay in Bude. We had lots of fun catching the waves on body-boards in the morning, and after a very satisfying packed lunch had more fun in the afternoon learning how to surf and catching yet more waves!

These photos are from today (the beach shot) plus yesterday (night walk).
